Questions, answered

The short version of how renting and lending work here. For the full rules see How it works, the Terms and the Rental Agreement.

Getting started

Who can join and what the ID check is for.

Who can rent, and who can list?

Anyone 18 or older can rent, from anywhere — locals, seasonal workers, visitors. Anyone with gear to hand off in Summit County can list it: no Summit County address, no local driver’s license, no approval — plenty of people who live here still carry a Front Range or out-of-state license, and that’s fine. When you sign up you tell us which you’re here for (renting, listing or both); it only changes what we show you.

Do I have to verify my ID?

Only when you pay for a rental, and only once. Sign up, fill in a one-minute profile and you’re in: browse the whole garage, list your gear, ask to rent anything, post on the Wanted board. The moment an owner accepts your request and you go to pay, you do a one-time ID check — about two minutes with a driver’s license — and then never again. Listing gear never needs it.

Why do renters verify their ID and take a selfie?

(If you’ve connected a bank account to get paid, Stripe already confirmed who you are as part of that, and you never see this step.) Because an owner is handing their skis, their bike or their sled to someone they just met. Every renter is verified by Stripe against a government ID and a live selfie before their first payment, so the owner knows exactly who is picking up. Lenders are approved by hand and Stripe checks their details when they set up payouts. We never see your document or store it ourselves; see the Biometric Data Policy.

Why do you need my mobile number?

Because there’s no app yet, texts are the push notifications: someone wants your gear, asked a question, replied, or accepted your request. A request expires if nobody answers, so sign-up asks for the number — no code to type, just the number and a tick — and you can change it or switch texts off on your profile afterwards (you’ll still get email and in-app notices). Your number is never shown to other members; reply STOP to any text to stop them.

How do I sign up and sign in?

Email and a password. When you sign up we send one link to confirm the address — open it on any device, phone included — and you’re in. After that it’s just your password, and a device you’ve signed in on stays signed in for about a year unless you sign out. Forgot the password, or joined back when we emailed codes? “Forgot your password?” on the sign-in page sends a link that sets a new one.

What is a Shred Score?

Your track record, in points. You start at 25 the moment your ID check passes; every completed rental earns points on both sides, good reviews add to it, no-shows and claims take from it. It isn’t a gate — any member can ask to rent anything. What can limit a listing is the rider level the owner set for it, checked against the ability you rate yourself at on your profile.

Renting

Picking dates, requesting, paying and the hand-off.

How do I pick my dates?

Every listing has a calendar. Tap the first day and the last day (or just one day for hour blocks and overnights). Days that are greyed out are either already booked or days the owner keeps for themselves, and a rental can’t cross them. The owner’s minimum and maximum rental length apply.

What happens after I request?

The owner has 48 hours to accept. Nothing is charged until they do. When they accept, you have one hour to pay and lock the dates (the deposit hold goes on your card at the same time) — your first time, the one-time ID check comes right before the payment, so start it as soon as you see the acceptance. The booking gets its own thread under Messages so you can plan the hand-off.

When am I charged?

When the owner accepts and you pay. The rental price, our 5% fee, tax where it applies and Stripe’s card fee are all shown before you pay. The owner is paid at the hand-off, not before.

What is the deposit and when is it held?

The owner sets a deposit on each listing. It’s a hold on your card placed when you pay, kept through the rental, and released when the gear is back and both sides confirm the return. Holds are capped at $2,500 and 5 days; longer rentals or bigger deposits are charged and refunded instead.

What do I do at the hand-off?

Look the gear over and confirm in the app; the owner does the same. A photo or a short video of the gear (the whole item, any wear points) is suggested for both of you — the listing photos are the baseline, and anything you add is the record if there’s a disagreement later. Your first rental has to be an in-person hand-off; lockbox pickups come with experience.

Can I extend a rental?

Ask in the booking thread. If the next days are open on the calendar, the owner can accept a second booking for them; otherwise return on time — late returns get a 2-hour grace period and then a full extra period is charged.

Lending

Listing, approving requests, days off and getting paid.

How do I list, and does someone have to approve it?

Sign up, then list it — no approval, no ID scan, no waiting. A listing is live in the garage the moment you save it. The only rules the form enforces: no phone numbers, emails or off-site handles in the text (everyone talks in Messages) and nothing on the prohibited list. Connect a bank account from your profile whenever you like — Stripe verifies you then, and rental money waits for you until it’s connected.

Can someone else run my rentals for me?

Yes — a gear manager: a local who takes your gear, meets the renters, does every hand-off and return and answers their questions, for a cut of each rental (most work around 50/50; you offer a cut, they accept or counter). You keep the price, the deposit, the rider level and the days you want the gear yourself, you get a text at every step, and your share lands at each hand-off. One manager runs all of your gear; either of you can end it and hand the gear back. Want to be a manager? Apply from your profile — Adam talks to every one before approving.

Is there an app?

Not in the App Store — the site installs like one. On iPhone, open summitshredswap.com in Safari, tap Share → Add to Home Screen; on Android, your browser offers Install. Open it from the home screen and turn on notifications from your profile: requests, replies and hand-off reminders pop up on your phone, free, alongside texts.

Do I approve every rental?

Up to you. By default, yes: every request lands in Activity and you get a text and an email. You have 48 hours to accept or decline, and you can read the renter’s profile, Shred Score and reviews first. Nothing is booked until you say so. Or tick Instant book on a listing: renters who fit your rules — your notice hours, minimum days, rider level, blocked days — book and pay on the spot, and you’re told it’s booked instead of asked. Instant listings get booked more, and you can still cancel one if you have to.

How do I block days I want the gear myself?

Open the listing’s Calendar from My garage. Tick your weekly days off — the Monday and Tuesday you always ride, say — and they stay off every week. Block one-off days (a trip, a race weekend) by tapping the first and last day. Renters see those days greyed out and can’t book across them. You can apply the same weekly days off to all your listings at once.

How do I know what I’ll earn and from whom?

Your gear page shows every upcoming rental — dates, gear, the renter’s name, its status and what you’ll be paid at the hand-off — grouped by month with a confirmed total, so you can plan around it.

When and how am I paid?

The moment both sides confirm the hand-off, the rental price minus our 5% is sent to your Stripe account. It shows under Your money on your profile as “settling” until the renter’s card payment clears (about two business days from when they paid), then it’s available to send to your bank or put toward a rental. Connect your bank from your profile; if a payout is ever waiting, we tell you.

What if the renter damages my gear?

File a claim from the booking within 48 hours of the return, with photos and a repair quote. The deposit stays held while the claim is open. Damage beyond normal wear is charged to the renter — from the deposit first, then their card on file — up to the replacement value you listed.

Fees, plans and taxes

What everyone pays and why.

What does Summit Shred Swap charge?

10% of the rental price, and that’s it: 5% from the renter on top of the price, 5% from the lender out of it (founding lenders skip the lender fee for their first 12 months). Listing is free. Stripe’s card processing fee (2.9% + $0.30) is shown as its own line; we don’t set it or keep it. Details on How it works.

Is there sales tax?

Where it applies, it’s shown as its own line before you pay and we collect and remit it as the marketplace. Lenders are responsible for their own income tax on what they earn; Stripe issues tax forms where required.

Where does my money go, and can I spend it here?

Every hand-off sends the rental price minus 5% to your own Stripe account. By default it builds up there: Your money on your profile shows the balance, and Send to my bank moves it to your bank in a couple of business days. When you pay for a rental of your own, tick Use my earnings and Stripe puts them toward the booking; your card covers the rest. Prefer hands-off? Switch on automatic payouts and Stripe sends everything to your bank on its own.

When things go wrong

No-shows, cancellations, late returns, damage, theft.

What if I need to cancel?

Free until 48 hours before the pickup window, full refund. Closer than that, the owner is paid a share of the rental price for the time they set aside — 10% a day or two out, 25% within the day, 50% in the last three hours or if you meet up and don’t take the gear — and everything else (fees, tax, deposit) is refunded. Owners can always cancel, and the renter is refunded in full — but it hits the owner’s Shred Score.

What if the renter doesn’t show up?

Wait 30 minutes after the pickup window closes and check the thread. Then mark the booking a no-show from the booking page: 50% of the rental price is sent to you for the day you set aside, the rest goes back to the renter, the dates open up again, and the renter loses Shred Points. Repeat no-shows close the account.

What if the owner doesn’t show up?

Message them in the thread first. If they don’t turn up, cancel from the booking page — you’re refunded in full, and their Shred Score takes the hit. Tell us at info@summitshredswap.com so we can follow up.

What if I return late?

There’s a 2-hour grace period. After that a full extra period is charged at the listed rate, and each further 24 hours is another one — taken from the deposit first, then your card. Message the owner as soon as you know; they can waive it.

What if it breaks, or gets lost or stolen?

Tell the owner right away in the thread and take photos. Damage beyond normal wear is on the renter, up to the listed replacement value. Loss or theft is the renter’s responsibility at replacement value; gear not returned within 48 hours of the due time is reported to law enforcement with the renter’s verified identity.

We disagree about a claim. Who decides?

We do, from the hand-off and return photos, the thread and the quote. Both sides can add their side within the claim. Decisions and any charge are shown on the booking.

Trust and safety

Reviews, messaging, off-platform deals.

How do I reach the other person?

In the app. Every question before booking and every booking has its own thread under Messages, and that’s where the hand-off gets arranged. Phone numbers and emails are never shared between members — not before a booking, not after — and anything that looks like one is hidden from a message. It keeps both people on the platform, where both are verified, the deposit is held and there’s a record — and it’s in the Community Standards.

How do reviews work?

After every rental both people rate each other: stars plus a few yes/no questions about communication, the hand-off, the return, the gear and the money. Reviews move the other person’s Shred Score and show on their profile.

What can’t be rented?

No firearms, ammunition or explosives (archery is fine), nothing stolen or unsafe. Powersports are off-road only, in-person hand-off, with licensed, of-age operators. The full list is in the Community Standards.
