Summit Shred Swap is Summit County’s peer-to-peer gear exchange. Locals list what they own; verified members rent it by the hour, the day, the night or the week. Money moves through Stripe: the renter pays up front, the owner is paid at the hand-off, and only the deposit is held until the gear is back.
Everyone is who they say they are
Every member verifies a phone, an email, and a driver’s license with a live selfie, checked by Stripe. We never see the license. Only Summit County residents can list gear; anyone verified can rent, and visitors pay a higher service fee.
Money first, then keys
Renters pay when the owner accepts. The moment both sides confirm the hand-off, the rental money is sent to the owner’s account. The only money that waits is the renter’s deposit, held on their card at pickup (unless they buy a Plus plan) and released when the gear comes back in good shape.
Break it, fix it
Damage beyond normal wear is on the renter — parts and labor, up to the replacement value the owner listed. Four photos at hand-off and four at return are the record. Protection plans cap the renter’s responsibility; owners can require one.
Not returned means reported
Gear not back 48 hours after the return time, with the renter unresponsive, is charged at replacement value and reported to law enforcement with the renter’s verified identity. The account is closed for good.
The exchange, step by step
- Owner lists. Photos, price per day (and per hour block, overnight or week if they like), minimum length, latest return time, notice needed, replacement value, deposit, and the hand-off options: a public spot, the trailhead or lot where it’s used, “swing by”, delivery, or a lockbox for trusted renters.
- Renter requests. Picks the dates, a hand-off option and window, a protection plan, and agrees to the Rental Agreement. Nothing is charged yet.
- Owner accepts. Within 48 hours. Contact details unlock in the booking thread; the renter pays within 24 hours to lock the dates.
- Hand-off. Both people photograph the gear and confirm in the app. The owner is paid right then; the deposit hold is placed; the rental clock starts.
- Return. Same photos, both confirm. The deposit goes back to the renter and both earn Shred Points. If the owner files a claim instead, the deposit stays held until it’s decided; claims can also be filed within 48 hours after.
What it costs
Listing is free. Renters pay a service fee of 10% (locals) or 15% (visitors) on top of the owner’s price; owners pay 3% from the rental, and founding lenders pay nothing. Protection plans are optional unless the owner requires one. Sales tax is collected where it applies.
Free cancellation until 12 hours before pickup. Inside that, the owner keeps one rental period. Late returns get a 2-hour grace period, then a full extra period is charged.
Shred Score
Every completed rental earns points on both sides — roughly one point for every five dollars of rental, so a $50 day is about 10 points and a sled day about 100. Points unlock the good stuff: owners can set a minimum score on a listing, motorized gear needs 80+, and lockbox pickups need what the owner sets. Ranks: Rookie, Local (100), Regular (500), Ripper (1,500), Legend (5,000).
Invite a friend, earn rental credit
Every member has an invite link on their profile page. When a friend signs up through it, verifies their ID, and then either gets a listing live or completes a rental, you get $20 in rental credit and they get $10. Credit comes off your next rental automatically at checkout; it isn’t cash and never comes out of an owner’s payout. One inviter per new member, up to 20 paid referrals a year, and fake or duplicate accounts void it.
Not allowed
No firearms, ammunition or explosives of any kind (archery is fine). No stolen or unsafe gear. Powersports — snowmobiles, side-by-sides, ATVs, dirt bikes — are off-road only, in-person hand-off, licensed and of-age operators. Full list in the Community Standards.
